Kerala is one of the most sought-after destinations of inter-state migrants, according to a recent report by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Most number of migrants are from Bengal, Assam and Bihar, the report, published on October 25, said. The report also says that India’s interstate migration rate doubled between 2001 and 2011 compared to the previous decade, growing 4.5 percent annually. The report further compares the birth rate of Kerala to that of Denmark. “Kerala, a destination for in-migrants, has a per-capita income four times that of Bihar’s and a birth rate of 1.6 children per woman, on par with Denmark,” the report said, adding that internal migration flows in India are driven by the states’ important economic inequities. According to the report, Bihar, which has one of the highest outflows of domestic migrants, has a per-capita income roughly equivalent to Somalia’s and a birth rate of 3.4 children per woman. Meanwhile, the main destination of inter-state migrants from Kerala are Karnataka and Maharashtra. WEF said annual interstate migration in the country averaged about 5-6 million migrants a year. Pune and Surat are the two Indian cities with high number of inter-state migrants in Asia. India is home to one-fourth of the 100 fastest-growing cities in the world, and Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata are among the 10 most populous urban areas worldwide. According to WEF, one of the principal drivers of this growth is rural-to-urban migration as people search for better economic prospects. Cities like Faridabad, Ludhiana and Surat total over 55 percent of inmigrants, whereas the rate in Agra and Allahabad is below 15 percent.
